It is one of life's great joys to see another individual come to know Christ as their Savior! Jesus, "who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross" (Hebrews 12:2), understood this. As a church, it is our duty to proclaim the gospel message, baptize & train those who believe to become faithful followers of Jesus Christ. As exciting as it is to see someone come to faith in Christ, it may even be more exciting to help a new believer take steps of faith and walk in victory over sin. Here you have the opportunity to see the reality of a person's profession of faith.
As the number of new believers grows, our church has to be more concerned with helping them grow to maturity. What is the best way to do that? There are many courses, books, etc. Which one works the best? Which method will our church be able to use the best? What materials can we use to train our members? How do you start a discipleship ministry?
You may have noticed already, but these are all the wrong questions. When trying to disciple others, it doesn't matter who produces the "sharpest-looking" materials. What should matter is: "what does the Bible say about discipling?"
So what does the Bible say about making disciples? In upcoming blog posts, I'll be trying to explain what I've discovered from God's Word.
- should discipleship be one-on-one?
- is any discipleship necessary beyond normal opportunities to hear preaching?
- how long should discipleship last?
- who should be involved in discipleship?
